Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup Recipe
Orzo is a variety of pasta shaped like a grain of rice. Even though it is not in my menu weekly, I really love and enjoy it in Chicken and orzo skillet and this lemon orzo soup. It is not an ordinary chicken noodle soup. But trust me, it is a comfort lemony goodness. Plus, it will be on your table in 40 minutes from start to finish which makes it perfect for busy weekdays.
The recipe is easy to make and you will need just few ingredients you most likely already have in your fridge.
How to make Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup
This soup comes together in a flash and easy to make. Cook chicken until brown, then add onion, garlic and carrot. Cook until tender, about 3-4 minutes. You can add also celery. I didn’t have it and left it out. The soup is very delicious without celery as well.
Next, add the chicken stock, bay leaves and lemon juice and bring to boil. Let it simmer for 5 minutes. At this point remove the cooked chicken and shred. Return back into the pot.
Finally, add in orzo pasta and cook further for 10-12 minutes or until the pasta is done. Adjust lemon juice, salt and pepper. Sprinkle with dill.
Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup Slow Cooker
- Place chicken (frozen chicken will work also) into your slow cooker. Add all the ingredients except orzo pasta. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on “low” for 5 hours or 4 hours on “high”.
- Add the orzo pasta, set time for 30 minutes and cook until orzo is tender.
You can brown the chicken and veggies on the stove before adding into the slow cooker for additional flavors.
Can you Freeze Chicken Lemon Orzo Soup
Yes! This soup freezes well. But orzo pasta tends to soak up all the broth and become puffy. If you plan to freeze the whole pot, I recommend to add orzo after you thaw it.
Creamy Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup
Are you craving creamy soup? Simply add 1 cup of heavy creamy + 5 cups of chicken stock. Heavy cream makes this soup really rich and filling.

Description

Ingredients
- Chicken thighs/drumsticks ( skinless and boneless)- 1 pound ( 500 g)
- Vegetable oil- 3 tablespoons
- Black pepper- ½ teaspoon
- Salt -1 teaspoon or to taste
- Onion ( finely chopped)-1
- Garlic cloves ( minced)- 1 tablespoon
- Large carrots ( chopped)- 2
- Chicken stock - 6 cups
- Bay leaves- 2
- Orzo pasta-¾ cup
- Lemon juice of 1- 2 lemons ( depends on your taste)
- Italian herbs- 1 teaspoon
- Fresh dill leaves (chopped)- 2 tablespoons
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large pot. Add the chicken, season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 10 minutes or until nicely browned over medium high heat. Then add the chopped onion, garlic and carrots. Cook until tender, about 3-4 minutes.
- Pour in the chicken stock and lemon juice. Add the bay leaves and Italian herbs. Bring to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove the chicken and shred it into your preferred size. Return back to the soup.
- Stir in orzo and cook until tender, about 10-14 minutes. Adjust lemon juice, salt and pepper. Garnish with dill leaves. Enjoy!
