โœ…You’ll Need

  • Tilapia Fillets: Fresh, flaky tilapia fillets (4-6 ounces each) are the star of the show. Choose high-quality fillets for the best results.
  • Seasoning: Season to taste.
  • All-Purpose Flour: A light coating of flour helps achieve a crispy, golden crust that adds texture to the tender fish.
  • Olive Oil: A tablespoon of olive oil ensures a beautiful sear and enhances the flavor profile with its rich notes.
  • Garlic Cloves: Infuse the oil with garlic cloves to add a subtle yet aromatic layer of flavor that complements the fish.
  • Unsalted Butter: Melted butter adds richness and a hint of sweetness, making a luscious finish for the tilapia.
  • Lemon Juice: A splash of fresh lemon juice brightens up the dish.
  • Fresh Flat-Leaf Parsley: It adds a pop of color and a fresh, herbaceous note.
  • Fresh Thyme: Optional, but highly recommended for an earthy, slightly minty aroma that pairs wonderfully with the fish.

Homemade Tartar Sauce

Whip up a batch of homemade tartar sauce and elevate your tilapia game! This zesty, creamy concoction combines the tang of capers, the crunch of finely chopped pickles, and the fresh burst of dill. Infused with a hint of garlic, a splash of lemon juice, and a savory touch of Worcestershire, this sauce is perfectly balanced with a blend of salt and pepper.

๐Ÿ”ชHow to Pan Sear Tilapia Fillets

Rinse tilapia fillets under cold water, pat dry, and season both sides with salt and pepper.

Place the flour in a shallow dish, press each fillet into the flour, and shake off any excess.

Heat olive oil in a skillet and brown 2 crushed garlic cloves, then remove.

Cook tilapia fillets in the infused oil for 4 minutes per side, brushing with melted butter in the last minute.

Mix mayo, capers, pickles, herbs, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl. Grate in garlic, add lemon juice, and stir well. Season with salt and plenty of pepper to taste.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸณExpert Tips

  • Dry the Fish Thoroughly: Pat the tilapia fillets dry with paper towels before seasoning. This ensures a better sear and prevents steaming.
  • Season Generously: Donโ€™t skimp on the salt and pepper. Proper seasoning enhances the flavor of the fish.
  • Infuse the Oil: Brown crushed garlic cloves in the oil, then remove them. This step adds a subtle garlic flavor to the tilapia.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Cook the fillets in batches if necessary. Overcrowding the pan lowers the temperature and results in uneven cooking.
  • Handle Gently: Tilapia is delicate. Use a spatula to gently flip the fillets to keep them intact.

๐Ÿ—„๏ธStorage and Reheating

  • Store leftover tilapia in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • For reheating, preheat the air fryer to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC), place the tilapia in the basket, and heat for 3-4 minutes until warmed through, or reheat in a skillet with a bit of oil for 2 minutes per side. If using a microwave, cover with a damp paper towel and heat in 30-second intervals. To keep the fillets moist, avoid overcooking and freshen up with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of herbs after reheating.

  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • ยฝ teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, optional

Tartar Sauce ( Optional)

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 5 tablespoons capers, drained and coarsely chopped
  • ยผ cup finely chopped pickles, such as cornichons or half sour
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill or parsley
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire or soy sauce
  • 1 small garlic clove, grated, using a Microplane
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • Prep the Fish: Rinse tilapia fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Season both sides of each fillet with salt and pepper.
  • Place flour in a shallow dish and press each fillet into the flour, shaking off any excess.
  • Infuse the Oil: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add 2 smashed garlic cloves to the oil and cook until they start to brown, then remove the garlic. This step infuses the oil with a subtle garlic flavor.
  • Cook the Tilapia: Place the tilapia fillets in the hot oil. If necessary, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Cook for about 4 minutes on each side, until the fish flakes easily with a fork. In the last minute of cooking, brush the fillets with melted butter.
  • Finish and Serve: Drizzle the cooked fillets with lemon juice.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley and thyme.

Tartar Sauce ( Optional)

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the mayo, capers, pickles, herbs, and Worcestershire sauce. Finely grate the garlic, using a Microplane into the bowl and add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Stir everything until well combined, then season the tartar sauce with salt and plenty of pepper to taste.

Notes

Store leftover tilapia in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
For reheating, use the oven at 350ยฐF for 10-15 minutes covered in foil, or reheat in a skillet with a bit of oil for 2 minutes per side. If using a microwave, cover with a damp paper towel and heat in 30-second intervals. To keep the fillets moist, avoid overcooking and freshen up with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of herbs after reheating.
