What is Hummus
Hummus is a traditional Middle Eastern dip. It is usually made of cooked chickpeas blended with tahini (sesame seed paste), garlic, lemon juice and salt. We are really lucky to be exposed to so many cuisines here in Dubai and buy products from all over the world. I get my tahini from any local supermarket because hummus is a staple food in the Middle East. Many people make tahini at home here. It is super easy! If you live in the USA, you can buy tahini in any supermarket that specializes in Mediterranean foods or at amazon.
Hummus Recipe without Tahini
Tahini has a nutty flavor, creamy consistency and is a little bitter. This makes it really interesting. But if you don’t have it on hand, try cashew or almond butter. They will add that richness you usually get from tahini.
The downside is the price. Nut butters are very expensive and not everybody can afford to buy them.
So if you don’t have nut butters or you are allergic to nuts, this is my go-to ingredients for hummus without tahini:
- Cooked chickpeas
- Garlic
- Lemon juice
- Greek yogurt or labaneh
- Cumin
- Salt
A Greek yogurt will add the creaminess to the hummus and will make it more interesting. But remember that yogurt is made of more than 80 % of water and hummus will be runnier. Substitute tahini with ONLY 2 tablespoons of yogurt for this recipe.
Cilantro Jalapeno Hummus Recipe
I have tried so many flavor combinations of hummus: Beet Hummus, Carrot Hummus, Spicy Hummus, Avocado Hummus, Roasted Garlic Hummus, and I absolutely love all of them. But every time I experiment by adding a new ingredient, it changes the taste completely and I fall in love again. This is exactly what happened with this recipe. I love the combination cilantro + jalapeno + lemon juice. Before making it I knew I would love this hummus! It turned out to be so good! The recipe is customizable, feel free to add more or less jalapenos.
How to make Hummus
- Use a high speed blender or a food processor to blend the cooked chickpeas, garlic, tahini, lemon juice, jalapeño, cumin and salt. You may need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides from time to time. Blend until you get a smooth paste. Taste it and adjust salt. If you find it to be not spicy enough for you, add more jalapenos and blend again.
- Transfer hummus on the serving plate. Top with the cooked chickpeas, sumac, sesame seeds and cilantro. Drizzle with olive oil generously.
How to serve hummus
Serve it with Arabic pita bread, veggies or grill meat. I usually serve it with my Lemon Garlic Roast Chicken or Garlic Herb Butter Roasted Chicken.
This Cilantro Jalapeno Hummus is a delicious, flavorful and healthy dip for you! Make it today for breakfast or lunch and enjoy!
