COOKING BROWN RICE

Brown rice is different from white rice not only in color. It is nuttier and chewier, it takes longer to cook it than white rice, about 15 minutes in an Instant Pot. Those who donโ€™t have an Instant Pot, will think itโ€™s really fast! Yes, it is. However, my Instant Pot Jasmine rice cooks in 4 minutes.

WATER TO BROWN RICE RATIO

The water to rice ratio is different too. Brown rice has the outer high-fiber bran and needs more water.

2 cups of rice =2 ยฝ cup of water

4 cups of rice= 5 cups of water

Do you have to soak brown rice before cooking in Instant Pot?

I would definitely recommend to soak brown rice to speed up the cooking process. This recipe calls for soaked brown rice. Put rice into a large bowl and cover with water, ratio 1: 2 (1 cup of rice= 2 cups of water). Soak at room temperature for 1 hour, then drain and rinse.

If you wish to skip this step, increase the cooking time to 20 minutes.

How to Cook Brown Rice in an Instant Pot

  1. Add ghee to Instant Pot and melt.
  2. Add 2 cups brown rice and 2 ยฝ cups water. Season with salt.
  3. Select Pressure Cookโ€“ High, set the time for 15 minutes and seal the lid. When timer goes off, press โ€œCancelโ€. Allow natural pressure release for 5-10 minutes.

HOW TO COOK BROWN RICE IN INSTANT POT

Ingredients 

  • Brown rice, soaked-2 cups
  • Ghee- 1 tbsp.
  • Water/Stock- 2 1/2 cup
  • Salt- to taste

Instructions 

  • Transfer the soaked rice into a fine-mesh,rinse and drain well.
  • Turn on the Instant pot, choose "Saute" mode and set time for 2 min. Add ghee and melt it. Press "Cancel".
  • Then add brown rice to the Instant Pot and mix with ghee.
  • Pour in water and add salt, then seal the lid of the Instant pot, choose "Pressure Cook" mode and set time +/- for 15 minutes. Press "Cancel" and allow natural pressure release for 10 minutes.
  • Open the pot and fluff the brown rice, using a fork. Serve with veggies or meat curry.
