Red Velvet Pancake Ingredients
The dry ingredients are:
- all-purpose flour
- granulated sugar
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- baking powder and soda
- Salt
For wet ingredients, we’re using:
- Egg
- Buttermilk
- butter
- vanilla extract
- red food coloring

How To Make Red Velvet Pancakes
To make the batter, you’ll first need to whisk your dry ingredients in a large bowl. Then, add your egg, buttermilk, vanilla extract, butter and food coloring. Mix until the batter has a smooth, uniform color to it.

How To Cook Pancakes
Cooking pancakes on an electric griddle is SO easy because it’s simple and straightforward to monitor the temperature. You can use a non-stick pancake skillet over medium heat if you don’t have an electric griddle handy.
First, preheat to 350 F (175 C). Once your cooking surface has reached the desired temperature, spray with a cooking spray the griddle/ pancake pan for each pancake you’ll be making. Cook your pancakes for about three to four minutes each, or until bubbles appear on the surface, then carefully flip the pancake over. Give it another two to three minutes on the other side. After this, if you stick a knife or fork into the center of the pancake, it should come out clean with no liquid batter sticking to it.

Cream Cheese Frosting
To really take this recipe to the next level, we’re using a delectable cream cheese frosting. We’ll be topping the red velvet pancakes with cream cheese frosting, which is really easy to make. You simply combine cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and whipped cream in a bowl, mixing it together until it has a uniform consistency, then top the cooked pancakes.

Red Velvet Pancakes Tips
- Everybody loves a fluffy, light pancake, right? The trick is not to over-mix your batter. When you combine your ingredients, you can make your pancakes fluffier by mixing the wet and dry together only until the flour has absorbed. You’re actually better off slightly under-mixing at this stage, because you’ll mix the batter again when you add the food coloring.
- When it comes to food coloring, you’re always better off using too little and adding more. You can’t un-mix food coloring once it’s already in the batter. Start with a little, and add a little more as you go until you’ve reached the beautiful red color we all love about this recipe.
- To make these pancakes extra special, garnish with some red berries, chocolate chips and a dusting of powdered sugar. Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries contrast nicely with the frosty white of your cream cheese frosting, and will bring out the rich, beautiful red color of the pancakes.
These awesome red velvet pancakes are an absolute must-try for anyone who loves red velvet cake.

- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups 470 ml buttermilk
- ¼ cup 2 oz butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
For The Cream Cheese Frosting
- 6 oz cream cheese
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- ¾ cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Equipment
Instructions
- Combine together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
- Make a well in the centre and add the buttermilk, egg, butter and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth. There might be a few lumps but it's fine. The batter must be thick in consistency. If the batter is too thick and doesn't pour off the cup smoothly- add a few tablespoons of buttermilk until you reach the desired consistency. Keep the batter aside.
- Heat a nonstick pan or griddle over low-medium heat and spray with a cooking spray or wipe with a little butter. Pour ¼ cup of the batter onto the pan and spread into a round shape with the back of measuring cup.
- Cook your pancakes for about 3-4 minutes each, or until bubbles appear on the surface, then carefully flip the pancake over. Give it another 2-3 minutes on the other side. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve with cream cheese frosting, fresh berries, chocolate chips and powdered sugar.
- Enjoy!
Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a small bowl beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form, using a hand mixer.
- Combine the cream cheese, whipped cream, powdered sugar and vanilla in a large bowl. Top the pancakes. If the cream cheese frosting is thick for your liking, add a couple tablespoons of heavy cream ( 1 tablespoon at a time) and beat until you achieve the desired thickness.
