This salad dressing is unusual and has a beautiful tangy-sweet flavor that you will just love if you are a sweet citrus fan. It uses fresh orange, a bit of sugar, and a little sweet tomato ketchup to bring in that big honeyed flavor. You wonโ€™t be overwhelmed by the sweetness, though, since this Japanese salad dressing is strikingly balanced with onion and ginger for a light spicy heat. A delicious light soy sauce will make it salty and savory so it begins to become a match for a large number of Asian-inspired salads.

To stick to the Japanese flavors and styles, you may want to plate this salad dressing very simply. A basic square onyx-colored platter may your preference. If you like light colors, use a high-gloss white plate to showcase the salad and then the orange, white, green, and red from the Japanese salad dressing.

My personal favorite thing about this dressing is how many ways you can use it. It can dress vegetables alone, you can serve it on a side salad with a Japanese-inspired meal, or it becomes the star on a large entrรฉe salad for those desiring to integrate more plant-based meals. On a warm afternoon with friends the dressing always gets my friends talking about how each bite is different. I am always asked later for the recipe for my Japanese salad dressing when my friends go home and canโ€™t get the memory of the taste of their heads!

You wonโ€™t be sorry you tried this even if it takes a little time to make. Itโ€™s worth every moment and itโ€™s easier than it looks. Just puree the main ingredients in the blender a little ahead of time. Whisk in your liquid ingredients right before you serve and have salt on the table so that each person can add some for their tastes.

Ingredients 

  • Carrot, cubed-1/2 cup
  • Celery, chopped- 1/4 cup
  • Onion, chopped- 1/4 cup
  • Ginger, minced- 2 tbsp.
  • Orange, peeled, seeded and cubed-1
  • Light soy sauce- 1 1/2 tbsp.
  • Rice vinegar- 1/4 cup
  • Ketchup - 1 1/4 tbsp.
  • Mayonnaise- 1 tbsp.
  • Vegetable oil- 1/2 cup
  • Sugar- 1 tsp.
  • Salt- to taste

Instructions 

  • Blend the carrots, onions, celery, orange and ginger in a food processor until pureed.
  • Transfer to a medium bowl.
  • Add the remaining ingredients ( soy sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, vegetable oil, sugar and rice vinegar) and mix until well combined. Adjust seasoning with salt, if required.
  • Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 week.
  • Stir well before serving.
  • Enjoy!
