Description
Make your own flavorful Sazon Seasoning at home! This versatile spice blend adds a burst of color and taste to your Latin American and Caribbean dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon ground coriander
- 1 tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon ground annatto seeds ((or turmeric powder, or a 50/50 combo of paprika and turmeric)
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt, optional
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl or shake them in a resealable bag or jar until the spices are evenly distributed.
- You can use it immediately to season your favorite recipes, or store it in an airtight jar or container for later use.
Notes
Use fresh spices: Ground spices lose flavor quickly, usually within 3 to 6 months after opening. So, use newly bought spices for the best sazon seasoning mix.
Store in an airtight container: Keep your sazon seasoning in a glass jar or airtight container to protect it from air and moisture. Avoid using plastic bags as they can puncture easily and let too much air in.
Makes 6 tablespoons. We usually use 1 1/2 tablespoons per pound of meat. The base is the dry ingredients listed above, but you can add fresh cilantro, adobo sauce, or onion if using it right away.
For the red color, ground annatto seeds are used, but you can swap them for turmeric or a 50/50 blend of turmeric and paprika.
2 ½ tablespoons of this seasoning equals one small 1.41-ounce store-bought packet of Sazon seasoning.
