What’s in a Godzilla sushi roll
Godzilla roll is a type of rolled sushi. The main ingredient is shrimp tempura, it adds crunchy texture to the roll. Shrimp tempura together with crab sticks, cucumber (or avocado), and cream cheese are rolled into a roll and fried till crispy.
The recipe might seem to be complicated at first glance. But it is really easy. You need only to master how to roll sushi rolls.
You can buy pre-made shrimp tempura in the freezer section of your local grocery store and save time. If you don’t like shrimp tempura, you can use cooked shrimp. The roll will be delicious anyway!

Ingredients for Godzilla roll
- Sushi Rice
- Shrimp tempura
- Imitation crab sticks
- Cucumber
- Cream cheese
- Toasted Nori seaweed sheets

How to make Godzilla sushi roll
These days shrimp tempura is very popular and many grocery stores like Trader Joe’s or Costco have frozen shrimp tempura. You can get it at the seafood section. It is super crunchy!
Another option is to make shrimp tempura from scratch. You will need 8 large shrimp for this recipe, 2 shrimp per 1 nori sheet.
Be sure to use Japanese short-grain rice. You can cook it on the stove or in instant pot. Season the cooked rice with rice vinegar. When assembling the sushi, don’t overfill with rice. Use ¾ -1 cup of cooked rice per nori sheet.

Perfect Godzilla Roll (Tips)
- Prevent rice from sticking to your hands: Keep a bowl filled with water nearby when you are assembling a sushi roll. Dip your hands into water every time you take rice.
- Roll firmly but don’t press very hard because the filling may come out of the sides.
