Nihari is a Pakistani curry typically consumed in the morning. Its origins can be traced back to the Mughal Empire that dominated the subcontinent prior to British colonization. Nihari is a stew of slow-cooked meat, usually beef or mutton, flavored with long black peppers and marrow. Typically, the dregs of a previous day’s nihari will be added to the next day. This is called the taar, and is believed to give a restaurant or family’s nihari a distinctive flavor. Some restaurants boast a taar going back hundreds of years!

This spinach cultivar is low in calories and packed with vitamins! It’s native to New Zealand, and needs to be blanched in hot water prior to consumption. This hardy vegetable is immune to insect consumption, with even slugs and snails avoiding it! Perfect for a home garden. British sailors actually took pickled New Zealand spinach with them on the long voyage home to ward off scurvy.
